[edit] Location
Burkes Pass Cemetery is located on State Highway 8 just west of Burkes Pass, approximately 15 minutes by car from Fairlie and 15 minutes from Tekapo.
NZSG: R04.02
[edit] Description
The cemetery is divided among Roman Catholic, Presbyterian, Church of England and other denominations.
The active part of the cemetery occupies less than 50% of the 2 hectares available and contains 760 plots of which 335 are in use or have been pre-sold. Over the last five years there has been approximately 6 burials per year. The cemetery has traditionally serviced Tekapo, Burkes Pass and the Upper Mackenzie Basin and has also catered for a number of mountaineers due to its proximity to Mount Cook.
There are currently discussions taking place which propose a cemetery for Tekapo. If this proceeds then demand for space within this cemetery will decrease.
Due to the small population of Burkes Pass and despite the current growth taking place in Tekapo it is unlikely that there will any requirement for development of the Burkes Pass cemetery in the foreseeable future.
