[edit] Description

[edit] Burials

                                         Clareville Cemetery Carterton.

This cemetery has also been known at Taratahi Cemetery.. I began researching this cemetery back in 2000, and it has turned out to be a most interesting project, to learn direct from descendants the history of their ancestors, for which I am most grateful for their wonderful co operation.

I hold the plans and lists of the burials, should any one wish need assistance in locating a grave, over 300 without headstones, but the surnames are on the plans.

The first recorded burial was 1866 for Thomas Reid. Second Jane Anderson nee Haxton in 1867. Charles Rooking Carter whom Carterton is named after is also buried there, sadly died in Wellington in 1896, (his wife and daughter are buried in Burbage. Derbyshire, I hold photograph of their headstone, as have visited the churchyard there, Jane died in London in 1870. Daughter, and his wife Jean/Jane died in Buxton in 1895) We also have the First Registered Nurse in the World buried at Clareville, Ellen Dougherty, died 1919.

Another burial is the family of Sir William Stuart-Forbes

I am able to photograph a headstone for you.

Research being carried out by Carterton Cemetery Clareville Taphophile Group.
